Since Dec 2019, COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2 or 2019-nCoV) has taken China and the rest of the world by storm.
Besides the direct health impact, COVID-19 has indirectly caused economic turmoil at both national and global levels.
COVID-19 belongs to a group of coronaviruses that include the common cold, or the more serious conditions named SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) and MERS (Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome).
COVID-19 is most similar to SARS (SARS-CoV or SARS-CoV-1), which was discovered in 2002 to 2004, infected 8096 people in 29 countries and killed 774 (9.6%).
Despite almost 20 years apart, there is still no vaccine/treatment for either SARS or COVID-19.
But there is hope.
Currently, 440 clinical trials for COVID-19 have been registered on ClinicalTrials.gov – the largest database of clinical trials – worldwide.
Two of these clinical trials are conducted right here in Australia: 1) CROWN CORONATION and 2) REMAP-CAP.
Both trials evaluate if anti-malarial drugs Chloroquine / Hydroxychloroquine and/or other previously approved drugs are effective against COVID-19.
The CROWN CORONATION trial examines the effectiveness of different doses of chloroquine/ hydroxychloroquine for treating COVID-19 in Healthcare workers.
Since these workers are at high risk, this study is a strategy to prevent healthcare systems from collapsing. This trial aims at recruiting up to 55,000 Healthcare workers aged 18 or over from Apr 2020 until Feb 2021.

The REMAP-CAP is an ongoing clinical trial, which has been recruiting since April 2016. This trial evaluates the effect of a number of drugs to treat pneumonia, the seasonal flu and COVID-19. Besides Hydroxychloroquine, some of the drugs used in this trial include Hydrocortisone, Ceftriaxone and Lopinavir/Ritonavir.
